Third and final physical meeting of Nordic and Baltic Circus Alliances... for now!

Last week, the Nordic and Baltic Circus Alliances project partners met for the Module 3 activities. This time we were trying to bridge the mapping done in Module 1 and the circus dreams we have for the future, which we dreamt in Module 2. This time we were warmly hosted by DYNAMO Workspace in Odense!


With the caring guidance of the company Urban Goods from Aarhus, we went through different tasks, prompts and directions of thought. This was the beginning of a strategy-building initiative, where we asked such questions as:


  • What do we have to give and gain from building alliances?

  • Which directions are a priority for us in the current future?

  • How to build a long-term network focused on the development of the contemporary circus ecosystem?

  • How to frame our need for data and collaborations so it is a fruitful endeavour?

  • How to hack the system with circus methods and take space and legitimacy in different levels of advocacy?

  • What knowledge do we already have in our industry that we can share and support?

  • and many others


As this is a pilot project for a longer initiative, this was also a challenge for the very practice-based participants to find structures in the not yet structured and articulated issues. To go from feeling to action without a strict plan. It is also a new challenge for us as BNCN to rethink the possible and needed collaborations in the Nordic and Baltic contemporary circus industry.


During our meetings, it is crucial that we not only think about circus, but also experience it together. This time, the meeting was also synchronised with the final days of residency for Galapiat Cirque and their work-in-progress "Mordicus". A thrilling background for such a workshop!


Now we are spending our time developing an overview of what we have done and working on the last part of this project - Module 4 - building the alliances. If you are curious to know more about the Nordic and Baltic Circus Alliances, don't worry, there will be a couple of opportunities! We will present the project and its results at our BNCN Members meeting this November, during the festival Cirkuliacija in Vilnius, Lithuania. As well as preparing a final publication where we'll share the findings and publish it here on the BNCN homepage.
