We are welcoming applicants for artist shadowing and peer-to-peer exchanges within the project ARTiculate Nordic and Baltic Circus Arts !

The project aims to recognise and articulate the artistic circus knowledge emerging in the Nordic & Baltic region. It offers opportunities for circus practitioners to share perspectives on artistic methods, approaches, and values. The project is supported by the Nordic Culture Fund.

Who can apply?

Circus creators from or based in the Nordic-Baltic region,
you should be a practising artist with experience in working with contemporary circus,
you should have a creative methodology that you are applying to your own work. This is needed to ensure reciprocity of the process and a possible support in the methodology articulation,
The language of the project is English; to ensure good communication during the project, a good command of English is necessary. We welcome applications from everyone, regardless of gender, age, nationality, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or background.
Artists can travel to their host organisations from anywhere in Europe.

What we offer

The project covers: travel support, accommodation, per diem, and participation stipend.

You’re welcome to apply to more than one open call. Applicants may submit multiple applications, provided they meet the criteria for each call.

What is the focus of this project?

At the core of this project is the concept of creative methodology within contemporary circus. We understand a creative methodology as any approach, strategy or framework that enables artists to express themselves in non-verbal ways, to explore and develop a creative practice. Methodological aspects can be: structure of the creative process, artistic tools employed, format, themes, models of working, a system of methods, approaches, and creative values.

Participants will be invited to articulate their methods, translating methods into written, digital or other mediums. Participants will engage in shadowing or peer-to-peer exchange, participate in public and private discussion sessions, hold a diary, and participate in live-streamed panel discussions.

Shadowing and peer-to-peer exchange

The central events of this project are two types of events: shadowing and peer-to-peer exchange. Although similar in their format, the difference in their intentions creates a different predisposition for the participants. There will be three separate open calls for these events, and they will be hosted by Cirkus Syd (SE), DYNAMO (DK) and Cirko (FI).

Shadowing

Potential participants are invited to apply to shadow another artist's residency process for one week. During this time, the participants will observe, document and discuss the artistic methodology with the artist in residence. The aim is to spark discussions and exchange of knowledge. After the shadowing, the participants will articulate their own existing or future artistic process or methodology. Tools to guide the knowledge exchange will be provided to support this process. Shadowing experiences will take place in Cirkus Syd (SE) and Cirko (FI). We will select one participant for each hosting organisation.

Peer-to-peer exchange

In the peer-to-peer exchange, two artists spend a week together in a designated workspace, exchanging methodologies and reflecting on the ideas that shape their creative processes. This format challenges the participants to articulate their methodology and creative process to another artist, in a reciprocal approach, with a focus on dialogue, reflection, and shared learning. Through conversations, feedback, and practical exercises, artists sharpen their language around creation. Tools for knowledge exchange will be provided to support this process.The peer-to-peer exchange experience will take place in DYNAMO (DK). We will select two participants for this exchange.
